Removing partitions icons from Ubuntu desktop
Submitted by Ulan Melisbek on Thu, 2008-03-27 06:31.After I completed my specific installation of dual system, I found out that Ubuntu had automatically put on my desktop two icons for the Windows partitions. I did not find it very much comfortable to have direct links to the system files, which I could accidentally harm. So I did:
- open up gconf-editor (hit alt+f2 and type in gconf-editor);
- go down to apps > nautilus > desktop and uncheck the box next to "volumes visible";
- close the editor;

Indeed, my Dell Inspiron 8300 laptop which was crawling quite slow and loaded under Windows XP, started to fly with Ubuntu. But shortly after I realized that if I could make without Windows XP, I could not make without some programms, which were supported only by Microsoft OSs, like, for instance, Adobe Photoshop. So I decided to give a try to dual boot installation.

Hardy Heron supports NTFS by default
Submitted by Ulan Melisbek on Tue, 2008-03-25 21:27.Google for Ubuntu and NTFS and you will find tons of different instructions on how to setup NTFS support in Ubuntu (and generally Linux systems). But none of them mentions (at least for now), that Ubuntu 8.04 to be launched in about a month, will support NTFS write and read functions by default!

Network Manager problem in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron
Submitted by Ulan Melisbek on Sat, 2008-03-22 10:50.Just have installed Ubuntu 8.04 Beta and since I did not like the way it starts up, turned on auto-login. Unfortunately, every time you start Ubuntu after this the Network Manager keeps asking you for your keyring password. Which is very much annoying. So I followed these steps to solve the issue:
1. Go to Administration > Synaptic Package Manager > Settings > Repositories > Third Party Software > Add...
